Steve Holcombe has extended his lead in the Enduro 3 World Championship following a hugely positive GP of Italy, the penultimate round of the 2016 EnduroGP World Championship. Topping the Enduro 3 class on both days to move 17 points ahead at the top of the class standings, Steve also finished third overall on day one before bringing the event to a winning close and topping the outright, day two EnduroGP podium.
Day one proved to be a frustrating one for Steve. Slippery conditions during the first half of the day ensured plenty of challenges with a number of small errors during the opening enduro test preventing him from challenging for the overall win. Nevertheless, with his focus on winning the Enduro 3 class he rode consistently to top the E3 class podium.
From the start of day two Steve was the rider to beat, going on to finish close to one-minute ahead of his closest challenger Johnny Aubert in the Enduro 3 class. Removing the small mistakes that had prevented him from challenging for the overall win on day one, Steve remained both fast and consistent to also earn his fourth outright EnduroGP win of the season.
The final round of the 2016 Enduro World Championship takes place in Cahors, France on September 10-11.
Steve Holcombe: “A double Enduro 3 class win and a day two outright EnduroGP win is a great way to sign off from the series before the summer break. Also, the Italian GP is a hugely important race for the Beta team so to be able to enjoy a winning result with them has been great. The race went really well. Everyone seemed pretty worried about how it would be, due to the rain we had during the days leading up to the start. But I wasn’t too worried. It was a little frustrating because I made a few too many small mistakes to challenge for the overall win on day one, but I still topped the E3 class so it was a good day really. The E3 championship is definitely the goal so I wasn’t prepared to go all-out and try and get the overall in. But on day two I started well, and felt comfortable all day. It was a shame that Matt Phillips went out, but I still had a great battle with Eero Remes. I couldn’t really have asked for a better GP.”
