Law achieves best overall result for Spirit Moto Corsa at Silverstone

Mason Law and Spirit Moto Corsa achieved their best overall result in British Supersport/GP2 in Silverstone’s Feature Race, finishing a very close second behind race winner Charlie Nesbitt.

After finishing second in class and sixth overall (but just six tenths off the overall win in a hotly contested race) on the Saturday, Mason was even stronger on Sunday and able to scythe through the leading Supersport runners in the middle of the race.

In the closing laps he was able to hunt down GP2 and race leader Charlie Nesbitt, but just ran out of laps and finished the race 0.119s behind.

Despite the numerous class wins the Spirit SP2 has picked up, this was the first overall top three finish for the motorcycle, it’s previous best a fourth place. It shows the development of the project and is reward for all of the team’s hard work.

After missing Saturday’s action due to a nasty crash in Free Practice Two, Jamie Perrin bravely battled through the pain to race on Sunday.

Jamie was able to get on the bike on Sunday

Despite missing a day’s running and being in obvious discomfort, Jamie fought his way up the pack admirably in the early stages of the race.

Unfortunately, he was forced to retire having earlier been hit by another rider during the Warm Up lap, with the impact leaving him winded and damaging the motorcycle.

Mason Law said:

Mason started the race from fifth place overall on the grid

“A great weekend for us. It was one of the circuits I had ear-marked as a target for us as I thought we would have a good package – both rider and bike. I gave it everything I had in every session both wet and dry.

“The bike was turning fantastically the whole weekend and I was able to carry more speed than my competitors in certain sectors of the track.

“We just need to find a bit of punch off the corners. It’s hard because we’re constrained by the rules, but the engine was up to mileage so we’ll have a new one for the next round.

“It took too long to pass the Supersport bikes and I had to make some late block passes at the second to last corner. It was tough, but it was good to get my elbows out.

“The result shows we’re on the right track and hopefully we can come to Oulton Park even stronger.”

“Recent development work on the Spirit SP2 was demonstrated at round 8 at Silverstone.  Mason and Jamie both had better speed and feel from the bike, particularly on the front wheel.  

“On Sunday, Mason illustrated how well prototype bikes work at fast corner circuits with both Charlie Nesbit and Mason Law leading the race overall. Of course, some circuits will be less favourable to the SP2 and other prototype bikes. However, Spirit are confident we have made substantive improvements to the package and we therefore look forward to a strong showing for the rest of the season.”

“I’m really happy with progress with the SP2 machine. We expected to be strong at Silverstone and missing out on the overall win by one tenth of a second was proof of our performance.

“We look forward to Oulton Park with Jamie being back to full strength, after his painful high side crash on Friday.”
