Podium Joy for Clarke and Apico Husqvarna at Blaxhall

June 06th 2015 | by James Burfield

Following the recent victory at the European Championships in Germany last weekend the Apico Husqvarna team headed to the Blaxhall Circuit in Suffolk for the fifth round of the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship. After racing at the Blaxhall Circuit earlier in the season the team felt confident coming into the weekend’s racing.

The day started off with bright sunshine as Steven Clarke and Matt Burrows headed out on the well prepared sand track for Practice and Qualifying. After suffering a slight problem with his machine Clarke only managed a handful of laps but still managed a solid ninth fastest time while Burrows ended the session in twentieth position.

The opening race of the day saw Steven storm to a great holeshot and take the early race lead with Matt inside the top 10 in 8th place. As the race went on Steven was involved in a three way battle for the lead and would eventually finish in third place whilst Matt crossed the line in 11th place.

In the second race neither Steven nor Matt made good starts and had to work hard during the early part of the race. Steven worked his way up into a solid fifth place at the finish while Matt suffered a crash and finished down in 26th place.

The final race would see Steven charge to another Foxwood Holeshot award and lead the race for the opening lap before slipping back to fourth at one point. Steven was able to recover towards the end and reclaim third place and with it third overall. Matt rode a hard race to recover from a bad start to finish in 20th and claim another championship point. Steven now sits 6th in the championship with Matt in 24th position.

Steven Clarke – today has been good, it was a bit of a rough start to the day in qualifying as I only got one lap in and then I jump off the track and got track tape caught in my brakes and lost the brakes so had to settle for 9th fastest. In the first race I pulled a mega holeshot and rode well but get a little bit tight and let Max and Lenoir get away slightly and finished third. Then in the second race I didn’t get the best of jumps but was quickly into 5th and settled there for the finish as I didn’t really have the pace to go at the front in the second race. Then in the third race I got a second holeshot award of the day and rode well, both Sterry and Watson got by me towards the end but I was able to get back by Sterry and take third for third overall on the day which is mega.

Matt Burrows – today has been a step in the right direction with an 11th in the first race, and then in the second I suffered a couple of crashes and in the last race I struggled with being tried. The track this weekend has been well good and I was enjoying my riding and it was a step in the right direction.

Richard Clarke – Team Manager – Overall I’m happy with this weekend as it’s been the best of the season for us so far. Steven has shown great speed today, his starts were good and obviously the podium is where we want to be. Matt was impressive in race 1 with a 11th, but suffered from bad starts in race 2 and 3, but never gave in and showed good speed which is promising.
